Chinese Herb Highlight: Poria + A Giveaway

 chinese-herb-poria

Poria, also known as Fu Ling, is a Chinese herb that has been used for medicinal purposes for over 2,000 years. Poria is actually a mushroom that is ground up into a powder to be consumed as a supplement.  In some practices Poria is used to treat anxiety, fatigue,  digestive and other nervous system issues.

What’s in Poria that makes it medicinal?

After doing some research, we found in WebMD that Poria contains anti-inflammatory chemicals, as well as compounds that reduce cholesterol.  According to this source, Poria contains polysaccharides, lecithin, potassium, zinc and essential amino acids.

What are the benefits from using Poria as a supplement?

Even though there are not sufficient studies for the effect of Poria, some sources claim that this ancient herb provides these benefits:

  • Decreases anxiety, nervousness, dizziness and insomnia
  • Stimulates the immune system and may have anti-cancer properties
  • Can calm skin irritations like psoriasis, acne and oily skin
  • May help maintain kidney and liver health
  • May lower blood sugar

Registered Clinical Herbalist Pauline Nelega also discusses the possible benefits of Poria in her article written for NaturalWellBeing.com
