I Tried It…My Colonic Hydrotherapy Review

Ok people of the world, it’s time to get real.  My colonic hydrotherapy review is here!

colonic hydrotherapy review

I’m all about digestion, making sure things are mooooovin’ along, and I’m always talking about it on Morning Shows. SO – when I was connected to a colon hydrotherapist and had the opportunity to try a colonic for the First. Time. Ever. I was on that opportunity like a gold digger on Tinder.

Today I’m going to be honest and open, and share with you my experience of getting something all up in a place that has been unmarked for 25 years.

So let me break it down for you, cause it’s about to get serious.

As you know I’m always trying new techniques, services and products that are wellness oriented. I already figured is that colon hydrotherapy helped deep clean your colon, release backed up waste, and relieve any sort of chronic constipation or digestive issues. What I didn’t know though is what it would feel like, it if would hurt, or if I would feel like I was in a scary inmate situation.

The day of, I wasn’t supposed to drink fluids for at least 2 hours before and I couldn’t eat about 3 hours before. That was easy.

I was also informed that I could possibly feel tired the remainder of the day and that I should use the rest of the day to rest. I’m always up for that.

When I arrived to Christina’s Colonics, I was feeling a tad bit nervous but most of all excited because I just love anything that has to do with..eliminating. My nerves finally calmed down when I was greeted by Christina. She has an extremely calming and welcoming aura to her – immediate girl crush commenced.

Before we began the procedure she asked me about my diet and regularity. She then proceeded to describe the process and assured me that there would not be any pain – thank the Lord above. Then we began..

My Colonic Hydrotherapy Review

Here is how it goes down. You lay on your side in the fetal position and then a tube is inserted into your ‘you know what’. You are then directed to sit upwards with your feet flat on the table (knees bent), and then water is pumped into your intestine. Christina asked me to let her know when I felt pressure that would equate to about a level 7 in discomfort. Once I felt this pressure, she would release the water and then the action happens.

First thoughts I had. Is this tube going to shoot out? Am I going to make a mess on this table? Will I accidentally go to the bathroom in my pants afterwards? I guess I was thinking out loud and Christina assured me that, no, none of this would happen. Immediate relief washed over me.

You, my dear reader may be thinking: was the tube big? Did the insertion process hurt?

Well, no the insert tip on the tube is not big, and no the process of inserting the tube did not *hurt*, but you can definitely feel it. It made me scrunch up my face like this.

I was there for probably 45-50 minutes and the cycle of pumping water into your intestines, then releasing the water (along with waste) was done 3 times. I was told that I would release even more if I was a bit more hydrated. Yes there were times throughout the three cycles that I thought I was about to go number 2 and something would happen (like the tube flying out), but that is just my own paranoia. Once the tube is in and the colonic is happening, there is no pain and it’s actually quite cool to experience.

After the session Christina gave me a list of what types of supplements I should look into (I was about to leave for Asia and who knows what would happen to my poor stomach over there), gave me some advice for what to eat afterwards, and I was on my way.

Did I feel lighter afterwards? Honestly, yes. I also had more energy, but I’m not sure if that was from the excitement of breaking my colonic virginity or from a mini detox session.

Would I do it again? Heck yes!! I’ll be there as the seasons change – doing my thing and jump-starting my seasonal cleanses. If anyone is going to get this procedure done for the first time, they *must* go to Christina. Not only does she know what she’s doing, she makes the entire process calming, fun and you don’t even feel embarrassed for flashing her your booty.

If you want to learn more about colon hydrotherapy, I picked Christina’s brain and she answered all my questions below. Also, keep an eye out for a future Balanced Babe feature on Christina. She has an incredible wellness journey and will be sharing her nutrition, fitness and wellness advice!

How Colonics Work

I asked Christina the benefits of experiencing a colonic, and more. Read on to see her answers!

BB: What are the benefits?

Oh the benefits of colonics. Where do I even begin. First and foremost, colonics help with chronic constipation and the reduction of abdominal bloat, by promoting regularity. That being said, I like to refer to colon hydrotherapy as a strength training exercise for the colon. The colon is a muscle, and just like any other muscle, if its not used regularly, it will begin to weaken. Constipation or irregular bowel movements are the main contributors to the weakening of the colon. A colonic stimulates peristalsis (successive waves of involuntary contraction passing along the walls, forcing contents onward), which strengthens the entire intestinal tract, making for successful future bowel movements. Another great benefit of colon hydrotherapy is glowing skin, bright eyes and increased energy.

BB: How often should you do it?

How often one should receive a colonic is also very individual. It can vary from weekly (those suffering from chronic constipation, illness, detox, parasite or liver cleansing), monthly or seasonally. The cleaner your colon, the more body awareness you’ll have, to the point your body will give you signals that its time for a cleanse.

BB: How long does the process last?

In a typical session, you’re on the table anywhere from 35-50 minutes. I don’t time the sessions because the body simply does not work that way. I schedule longer sessions so my client and I can have ample time to talk prior to getting started, have plenty of time on the table and more than enough time for my client to comfortably and privately release more after session. I ask that first time clients clear about 90 minutes from their day to spend with me, and return clients about 75 minutes.

BB: What should you eat before and after?

For a successful colonic, you must be hydrated. I ask that leading up to the colonic, which, this should already be apart of your day to day, that you drink 2liters-1 gallon of water. As for eating, it’s best to avoid fried, processed or uncooked foods, and to cease food about 3 hours before your scheduled colonic. Liquids I ask about 1.5-2 hours before session time. Afterwards, you can absolutely go about your day as you normally would. Foods that I recommend would be soft, cooked and mildly spiced, and to of course, hydrate and replenish with a probiotic.

BB: What should you expect after your first session?

After your first session it is not uncommon to feel a little tired, mild cramping/bloating, or slightly fatigued. You may also have another gentle release post colonic, nothing that would prevent you from going about your normal daily activities though. It is also not uncommon to not have a bowel movement the morning after a productive colonic. Discomfort, if any, post colonic will subside the next day. It is also not uncommon to leave session feeling light on your feet, with an abundant amount of energy and somewhat euphoric.

BB: Are there any negative side effects or precautions one should take before getting one done?

There are no negative side effects aside from what I mentioned above. However, it is not advisable to have a colonic if you’ve recently had rectal or colon surgery, if you suffer from cancer of rectum or colon, congestive heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, kidney disease, fissures or fistulas, abdominal hernia, severe hemorrhoids, GI hemorrhage/perforation or an aneurysm.

BB: How do you know when you need one?

Our bodies are smart, and body awareness is very real. A healthy person in need of a colonic will usually notice sluggishness, abnormal bloating and/or excess gas, feelings of fatigue, headaches, as well as breakouts or a foul body odor. A clogged colon is similar to an overflowing septic tank that can spread toxicity throughout the body. A few colonics a year, accompanied with a healthy and balanced diet, proper hydration, daily exercise, adequate rest and a positive mind is a recipe for a very happy body, mind and spirit.

Great review. I have a colon care center very close to my home and have always wanted to do this due to constipation problems, but fear and embarrassment have kept me from scheduling it! My questions: After the hydration, where does the release happen - into what? Are you getting up and going to a bathroom, or is it being released into a bag.... ? And, after each hydration does the amount of waste increase or decrease?

Hi Thea! Thank you for your comment and questions! The release happens as the water solution is drawn out into the tube that is inserted. You do not have to get up to use the bathroom throughout the process, you're just required to use the bathroom at the end of the service. The amount of waste varies depending on each individual and how often he/she gets the service done. I hope this helps!!

Thanks for the great article Sarah! As I was looking up articles on the actual process itself, whether it hurts, is scary, will make you go on the table, etc this is one of the best. I thought this one was great too and it also went into the details of how it is hygienic and which machines are best / FDA approved etc! http://pureonmain.com/colon-hydrotherapy
