It’s allergy season, people!

Many of us suffer from allergies. I started personally suffering from allergies just a few years ago have experienced it in the form of puffed up eyes and sinus issues. Yet many other people experience allergies in the form of respiratory itchiness and/or coughing. Allergies can be a real pain in the you know what and more and more of us are looking for remedies or homeopathic blends to help alleviate the symptoms that come with allergies instead of downing Benadryl or other over the counter medication.

Let’s face it, the modern day Balanced Babe doesn’t want to be taking prescription meds or pills daily. Those that follow the BB lifestyle like to look for homeopathic options (that compliment the handy dandy work of our doctors, of course), before we jump hop and skip over to the pharmacy. So I did some sleuthing as I usually do and found the nitty-gritty on some essential oils that help open up our airwaves and inspire us to breathe easier this season. So take a peek:

Essential oils That May Help You Breathe Easier

Eucalyptus: This specific oil has been used for many years to help with respiratory problems that contribute to sore throat, nasal congestion, cough, and even sinusitis and bronchitis. Eucalyptus oil has antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that act as a natural decongestant. As a natural remedy, some people blend a few drops of eucalyptus oil with warm water to gargle when experiencing a sore throat (cause let’s face it, gargling salt water can be ehhh a bit tricky). This is also why many steam rooms are also infused with eucalyptus oil to act as a decongestant for our lungs.

Lemon: Inhaling lemon essential oil is also believed to help open up nasal pathways and help clear up sinuses. Lemon also helps perk us up when we need a mental pick-me-up.

Myrtle: Myrtle essential oil has a slew of different potential health benefits behind it. Some sources say when it is ingested (of course only ingest essential oils with extreme caution and consult your physician before you try something new), it acts as an astringent by tightening skin from the inside out thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and it also acts to reduce phlegm in our bodies (especially during allergy season). Aaand if you read to the bottom you’ll find an essential oil supplement that’s been un-stuffing noses for 40 years, so there’s a way to add all of these oils together!

Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil contains menthol in it which helps relax the muscles in our lungs, it is also believed to have antihistamine effects as well.

Herbs & Other Natural Ingredients

Oregano oil: Oregano contains two compounds rosmarinic acid and carvacrol, which have histamine (which is what our body produces when we experience allergies), and decongestant properties. You can blend oregano oil or tinctures with your olive oil or cooking oil when making recipes to reap the benefits!

Apple cider vinegar: Many people go crazy for apple cider vinegar and take shots of it to help clear out mucous when they’re experiencing a cold or allergies.

Garlic: There’s a weird trend out there that claims that eating straight up garlic bulbs helps fight off colds and clear out any congestion. Because of its antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, it can help fight off infections that leads to congestion.

Turmeric: Because of its high antioxidant content, turmeric helps lower inflammation that is caused by allergies or even asthma. It also has been linked to helping support our immune system by making it stronger.

Remedies:

  • You can take a shot of apple cider vinegar
  • You can inhale any of the above listed essential oils
  • You can make an herbal steam by adding dried oregano and dried peppermint leaves into a pot of boiling water and using it as a facial steam once the water comes to a boil. Just be sure to take the pot of water off of the stove so that you don’t light your hair on fire.

OR! If you are sick and tired of remedy-ing your life away, there’s an essential oil blend that is used as a supplement form called Myrtol 300 that combines the power of myrtle, lemon, eucalyptus, and essential oils.
