Calm your mind by trying my springtime botanical beauty ritual.
Not only is it time to lighten up our meals to welcome warm weather, it’s time to transition to a lighter beauty routine too! I’m sharing my springtime botanical beauty ritual on WGN Midday News and it’s filled with fabulous smelling flowers, nourishing oils and even activated charcoal.
I take the time once a week to indulge in this springtime botanical beauty ritual. It’s a special treat that I really look forward to, and I reap the benefits both physically and mentally. I typically choose to do my longer beauty rituals on weekends when I slow down my schedule. Now I’m excited to share this routine with you in hopes that you’ll be inspired to slow down one of these evenings and pamper yourself with natural remedies!
My Springtime Botanical Beauty Ritual
1: Wash with a natural exfoliate: I always start my routines with a clean face. I just tried Surya Brasil Sapien Women facial scrub last night, and boy did I enjoy it! The smell of coconut made me feel like I was on vacation and the coconut bark was not harsh on my skin at all.
2: Use a botanical steam: Steaming your face opens your pores so that when you apply a mask or serum, they seep in and nourish deeply. I add dried herbs and botanical leaves to my steam to give my skin some extra nourishment and circulation. Not to mention the calming sensation from some of the ingredients..
1/4 cup chamomile
2-3 tbsp lavendar
2 tbsp rosemary
1 tbsp sage
Heat a pot of water until it boils. Steep the herbs in the water for about 3-4 minutes, then take the pot off of the heat and place your face over the bowl. Enjoy the steam for between 5-10 minutes.
3: Apply a moisturizing hair mask: I then apply a hair mask from roots to tip to help heal my hair from the harsh winter. I also get blonde highlights so this helps with any damage from color processing as well. I use about a 1/4 cup of olive oil with 5-10 drops each of rosemary and sage essential oils. Rosemary and sage help clarify hair so this mask is a nice blend of hydration and shine therapy. I apply the mask until my hair is thoroughly coated and then I twist my hair into a loose bun at the top of my head. I let it sit while I’m doing this next routine..
4: Detox bath: I talk about detox baths all the time and I’m not going to stop! This is a part of every single one of my rituals – and for good reason. I soak in a hot bath filled with 2 cups of epsom salts and an essential oil blend of my choice. Epsom salts are magnesium and sulfate which help draw out toxins from our skin and cause us to sweat. I like doing this especially on Sundays if I’ve been enjoying wine over the weekend. I typically use 5-10 drops of lavender to calm down, or citrus oils to energize. I’ll soak in the bath between 20-45 minutes, depending on how much time I have.
5: Body exfoliation: As I’m rinsing off I’ll then exfoliate my entire body with either a coffee scrub or brown sugar scrub. If I’m using coffee – I’ll save the grounds from my morning brew. Otherwise I’ll use brown sugar from the local grocery store. All you need to do is mix the scrub base with 1 cup of oil (I use either almond oil or coconut oil), and some essential oils. A simple, natural product that does the trick!
6: Detox face mask: I make this special face mask when I need to deep clean my face and unclog any impurities in my pores. I use activated charcoal, tea tree oil and sesame oil for this one. Some of you may be thinking, activated charcoal?! But yes! I take activated charcoal supplements and split open the pills (about 3) and use the powder as my active ingredient. Activated charcoal absorbs molecules when wet, so it’s the main reason why your skin will feel so smooth and fresh after applying the mask.
2-3 broken capsules activated charcoal
1 tbsp water
2-3 drops tea tree oil
1 tsp sesame oil
All you need to do is mix together the ingredients, apply to your entire face, let sit for 20 minutes, wash off with a cloth, moisturize and you’re glowing!
7: Self Massage: The final step to my springtime botanical beauty ritual is to apply a body oil before I go to bed. This remedy deeply moisturizes and stimulates the lymphatic system. I use sesame oil as the base since it penetrates deeply into the skin, and blend vanilla and orange essential oils for a nice warming and comforting scent.
Massage Oils (this will last you about 5-6 uses):
1 cup sesame oil
5 drops vanilla essentials
5 drops orange essentials
I then throw on my pj’s and hit the hay. This luxurious yet affordable spa routine will uplift your mind, body and soul for the new season ahead. It’s also the perfect routine to do before you go on a special date night.
