As we approach Christmas, there’s no denying that we’re heading into the winter season. Unless you’re lucky enough to live in a locale without seasons, you’re already starting to pull out your favorite cozy winter scarves, coats and boots and moved your sandals and shorts to the back of the closet. This shift shouldn’t be limited to your wardrobe: your home décor can also make the transition from cool and breezy to warm and cozy. There’s no need for a full-scale renovation. Some of our favorite projects incorporate mixing traditional and contemporary décor. This is often referred to as transitional design.
Being based in Chicago, many of our clients already have traditional styled homes that tend to feature ornate designs coupled with rich browns, golds and greens. We’ve found that many aspire to have a home that is more contemporary in style. To achieve this, we implement elements with clean lines that offer a bright and airy feel. Does this sound like you? Well, then, your style is transitional! Here are a few tips you can use to get started with transitional decor:
Modernize your décor:
There are a few different ways to modernize your décor while maintaining a comfortable, contemporary feel in your home. When curves and straight lines come together, they create the perfect balance of masculine and feminine features. Try pairing an overstuffed sofa with a metallic side table or a sleek bed frame with a rounded nightstand.
Take the minimalist route:
The less-is-more adage should be applied when revamping your space in a transitional style. Do away with the clutter and use baskets and decorative boxes to hide your miscellaneous household items. Accent your sofa or settee with a few accent pillows and a simple throw. To maintain a minimalistic balance, be selective in your choice of photographs and accents. In the kitchen, clean up the counters by tucking away appliances until they are needed. As they say, “A little goes a long way.”
Use color sparingly:
The transitional color palette relies on neutral shades with pops of color to add depth. This year’s Pantone colors are based on transitional hues, our favorites being the bluish-grey “Stormy Weather” and the deep blue jade “Reflecting Pond.” These colors are reminiscent of cooler temperatures and are still neutral enough to be transitional colors. Bring a pop of color into the room by using brightly colored frames or bold accent furniture. Try featuring hues of bright green, yellow, blue, orange, or pink.
Texture is your friend:
Texture will go a long way in warming up your space. Mixing textures works best when the tones are in the same color family. Try bringing in an ultrasuede chaise lounge, leather pillows, or a shag rug. These elements add visual interest without overpowering the design.
Don’t overlook the small spaces:
Small spaces can pack a big punch; so don’t forget bathrooms, closets, or little nooks. The bathroom can be transformed into a modern space by switching out standard features like a pedestal sink to vessel sink. Small closets that are not in use can be re-purposed as a wine cabinet or bar. Cheers!
The transitional style allows your home to flow seamlessly when updating your space from conventional to contemporary. You don’t have to rush out to buy new pieces; re-purpose what you already have, and don’t forget to have fun with it!
