BB: What diet fads do you think are all marketing schemes?
F: (1) Any diet that radically cuts calories: You might get quick results, but ruin your metabolism in the process and often gain back more weight than you lose. (2) Any diet based on taking special pills, powders, shakes or food bars: Obviously these are just gimmicks to make money and sell product — think of the gym “nutritionist”. (3) Any diet that makes you completely cut out a food group (fat, protein, carbohydrate): This is called deprivation – I hate that word! Our bodies need certain nutrients from all the food groups in order to sustain normal metabolic functions. Think of the Atkins diet and how it produces ketones in the urine.
J: Any diet fad that makes false promises of RAPID weight loss through extreme deprivation (think grapefruit and hot dog diet), magic pills, or complete removal of one of the three food groups is not cool with me. Having previously worked for Whole Foods as their Vitamin Buyer/Specialist I constantly came across lost souls that searched the aisles for that “magic” diet pill that Dr. Oz recently recommended. Whether they were looking Garcia Cambogia, Green Bean Coffee Extract or African Mango, there was a common theme of a desire for a quick fix. True weight loss and maintenance requires a balanced approach AND willingness to change.
