The Oil I Use For Stretch Marks, Anti-Aging, Acne and More!

I have drastically reduced and simplified my beauty routine lately – essentially cutting out about 10 products that I experiment with and really reverting back to basic, organic and natural products. I used to use all sorts of different spot treatments, active serums, masks, peels, different types of moisturizers, scrubs… really everything and anything you can think of.

Since letting go of quite a hefty amount of products to focus on a more easy, quick, yet still indulgent and simple routine – I’ve noticed that my skin looks more hydrated, CLEAR (which is HUGE because I battle with hormonal breakouts all the flerfin time), and my skin tone has evened out. I’m not sure if it’s because my hormones are drastically changing these days, or if I’m not putting 20 different ingredients on my skin daily. Either way, me likey.

I’ve cut down my routine to this: Morning cleanse, natural spot treatment, and an oil based moisturizer. My evening routine is the same: A good cleanse, natural spot treatment, and a moisturizer. On Wednesdays I use an enzyme exfoliator in the shower that I leave on for a hot minute and on Sundays I use a clay mask to give my skin an extra detox.

Even though I’m still planning on rotating the types of oils, moisturizers and exfoliators I use on my face, I’m going to keep this simple routine for as long as I can. I think the most important part of my skincare routine is the type of oil I use to include in my moisturizer, as botanical oils have all sorts of properties that interact with the health of our skin. So I want to focus today’s post on the type of oil I’m currently using: Sea buckthorn oil – an oil with over 200 nutrients!

Sea buckthorn oil is extracted from orange little berries that grow on a shrub in mountainous regions of Asia and Europe. It is an oil that has been used for centuries by many cultures for its incredible healing and rejuvenating properties, and since I want nothing more than to heal my skin from inflammation and prevent signs of aging as naturally as I can (for now) – I’ve been all for incorporating sea buckthorn oil into my routine!

All The Beauty Benefits of Sea Buckthorn Oil

1: Hail the healing powers of sea buckthorn: This oil is extremely high in antioxidants making it chalk full of anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Sea buckthorn oil can help heal and calm down skin irritations like burns, bites, pimples, rashes or any other types of damage.

It can also help provide soothing comfort if you get sunburnt, or if you’re experiencing painful or itchy eczema.

2: Can help prevent stretch marks:

Sea buckthorn oil’s vitamin E and A content helps heal new stretch marks, and can prevent new ones by strengthening our skin. It also helps promote elasticity meaning that our skin can more easily bounce back when it’s being stretched out. It’s a perfect ingredient to add to pregnancy remedies!

3: Helps hydrate and rejuvenate:

Sea buckthorn oil is deeply hydrating, promoting healthy elasticity of the skin and helps repair and regenerate skin cells. The amount of amino acids and fatty acids in this oil is what makes it a stellar natural moisturizer. It can also really help strengthen skin to protect it from harsh weather and environmental pollution.

4: Prevents signs of aging:

Because of the nutritional profile of sea buckthorn oil that makes it extremely rejuvenating, its protection can also help prevent early signs of wrinkles and aging in our skin. Some skin care experts also believe that using sea buckthorn oil on skin that is already  showing fine lines or slight wrinkles can help smooth out and minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

5: May act as a natural defense against acne:

Because of its natural anti-inflammatory properties, sea buckthorn oil may help prevent acne when added to cleansers or serums for spot treatment. It’s antibacterial properties can help cleanse clogged pores in a gentle and non abrasive way. It can also help heal and fade new or old acne scars, or prevent them in the first place.

Nutritional profile of sea buckthorn oil:

As I mentioned earlier in the article, sea buckthorn oil contains somewhere around 200 nutrients. Talk about a super beauty ingredient! Here’s a list of some of its nutrients and the benefits behind each nutrient:

  • Beta Carotene: A natural antioxidant helping give skin a beautiful natural glow.
  • Vitamin E: Helps calm inflammation and redness and can even prevent stretch marks.
  • Vitamin C: Helps brighten skin complexion.
  • Vitamin A: Helps rejuvenate skin.
  • Contains omega-3, 6, 9, and 7: These essential fatty acids help skin membrane health which contributes to keeping our skin hydrated.

Where to source sea buckthorn oil:

You *can* look for beauty products that contain sea buckthorn oil in it – but I don’t believe that they will have the same benefits as using true sea buckthorn oil straight from the bottle. I like buying pure, organic sea buckthorn oil so that I’m ensuring I’m getting all of the possible benefits! My hands down go-to brand for sea buckthorn oil is SeabuckWonders. They have been producing sea buckthorn longer than any company in the US and they make USDA-certified organic oil products with absolutely no fillers in a good manufacture practice (GMP) facility. SeabuckWonders tests as having the highest levels of omega-7 in the industry and their extraction method ensures that all nutrients are kept within the oil. I like using both their seed and berry oil (the only difference is that berry oil contains omega-7 in addition to omega-3, 6, and 9, while seed oil contains only omega-3, 6, and 9.

How Does Sea buckthorn oil work?

You can apply the oil topically or even consume it internally as a supplement by adding it to your daily smoothie or juice. I like to use it topically and I blend it in with all my natural remedies – you can learn about my top favorite three remedies in this blog post here! If you do decide to take it internally, consult with your primary care physician first.

Also – when using this oil topically make sure that you don’t use more than the recommended dose as it has a bright orange hue and can stain if used in very large amounts. You should also give yourself a patch test first to rule out any allergies.
