My Morning Routine To Jump-start Digestion

My morning routine to jump-start digestion includes tons of fluids, getting my digestion flowing by using movement, amping up the probiotics and more!

Mornings, it’s the time when we can savor a few minutes to ourselves. To prepare ourselves mentally, physically and spiritually for the day.  When it comes to morning routines to support my physical self (especially digestion), I go through an entire process that I think others could benefit from too. Last week’s article about triphala powder was so popular, that I figured I would add more information around digestive health and how we can support it during our morning routines too.  So today’s article is focused on morning routines to keep our digestion in tip top shape!

I know far too many women who wake up and run out of the door, not even giving themselves times to start their digestive process for the day. This leads to one: being backed up all week, and two: being susceptible to easy weight gain. Neither are fun. Not only do we need to start incorporating a routine to keep our gut working in tip top shape, our immune system is linked to our gut as well.   Our gut is one of our primary systems that protects us against illness and disease. Almost 80% of your immune system is in your gut!

This is why it’s so important to be mindful of how we can consistently experience optimal gut health. There are many things we can do to keep balance between the good and the bad bacteria in our belly.  So here are simple ideas for a morning routine to jump-start digestion and to get those good levels of bacteria in our gut on and poppin’!

My Morning Routine To Jump-start Digestion

Getting prepared the night before can set the tone for the whole day and have you waking up more relaxed before you even jump out of bed.  Who wants to stress about thinking what they have to do and putting it to paper first thing?  I love the idea of quieting my thoughts as soon as I wake up by meditating and starting the day with gratitude and new possibilities!

Upon Rising Start The Day With:

Lemon Water  First thing in the morning, drinking warm lemon water is believed to be a form of detox for gut health. Water helps flush our system of waste and adding fresh lemon juice provides vitamin C and minerals like calcium, potassium and iron for an added immunity boost. If you want to switch up your waters even more, you can also sip on probiotic infused waters like these from Uncle Matt’s (more on this later!). Try drinking at least 16 ounces of warm water mixed with a lemon throughout your morning routine.  I know lots of gals who add ginger to their morning drink for an added boost.

Healthy caffeine: Some of us are sensitive to coffee in the morning because of the acidity. If this is the case for you, I hands down recommend matcha! Getting that boost of matcha not only helps you jumpstart your metabolism, but it gives you an energy boost without the jitters. Sometimes I like to have a cup of regular matcha tea, but there are tons of products popping up that contain matcha as well, one being this green tea matcha lemonade from Uncle Matt’s!   This is a 50/50 blend of organic Matcha green tea and organic lemonade. I like adding a dash of this in warm water since it’s sweet, but you can obviously have it by itself for a morning pick me up!

Hydrotherapy in your morning shower can improve your immune system by taking a hot water shower followed by a burst of cold water for 30 to 45 seconds.  The body’s reaction to hot/cold stimulation is what makes this water therapy effective in getting the blood flowing and stimulating the immune system.  This is also a great way to use your favorite aromatherapy with the steam from the shower.

Taking a 20-30 minute jog will get things moving. Seriously. I try to go for a jog for 30 minutes before I have breakfast every day not only to burn fat but to also help elimination, to be frank. Not into jogging? Try going for a brisk walk or do some digestive boosting yoga sequences to wake up your digestive system for the day.

Breakfast should consist of non-processed foods, and fermented foods like kombucha, cottage cheese (if you eat dairy), and soups. I love having fermented soup for breakfast like miso or  broth-based with pickled veggies and spices like ginger, or garlic (which is technically a veggie).  Or how about trying fermented sauerkraut with vegan or turkey sausage for breakfast?  If you don’t particularly like fermented foods, then consider the advantages of taking a quality probiotic supplement.

I also make sure I get probiotics in my system first thing. Fermented foods have probiotics naturally but I always like to add a probiotic supplement or create a morning wellness tonic thats oozing with it too.  You can read all about why I’m crazy for probiotics here! Oh and besides the Matcha lemonade, Uncle Matt’s also has other superfood packed juices like their Orange Turmeric Orange Juice with 500mg of Turmeric and Probiotics. This specific blend is  also packed with vitamin C, B, and natural electrolytes. Other than that, they offer probiotic waters, and  another probiotic packed orange juice, Reduced-Calorie Orange Coconut that is only 70 calories with all organic ingredients and 40% less sugar than regular OJ!

The fruit infused probiotic waters can be sipped throughout the day too to make sure that your digestion is in tip top shape, so you can be mindful of your gut health continually! Plus, these waters contain real peel inside, which is full of antioxidants that are good for your body. I think Uncle Matt’s is the perfect brand to try since they’re a family owned company that is committed to organic farming and conscious about how they produce their products.

Other gut health foods include: seeds like chia, flax and pumpkin; fruit like blueberries, bananas,  and strawberries all of which are great added to yogurt or cottage cheese; veggies like kale, cauliflower, broccoli and mushrooms can be added to egg whites or egg substitute to make a tasty omelet. To top off your morning of wellness tonics and movement, it’s crucial to make sure that you focus on consuming foods that are low in processed sugar. Gut bacteria loves sugar, so you aren’t just feeding the good bacteria, you’re feeding the BAD too.  Poor food choices can lead to an imbalance in the good/bad gut bacteria, with the bad bacteria winning out. So try to make sure you’re consuming healthy fats and proteins first thing!
