It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared a natural beauty remedy. I think with today being New Year’s Eve (yay), it’s now the perfect time to talk about an ingredient in today’s beauty remedy, that I put in my salads and chilled recipes: olive oil.

Now even though olive oil isn’t the best oil to cook with (because of it’s low smoke point causing potentially harmful compounds to form), it is still packed with benefits and a glorious ingredient to use in natural beauty remedies. Today, I’m sharing a homemade olive oil face mask that will be sure to quench your thirsty skin.

Benefits of Olive Oil:

I love using extra virgin olive oil in my salad and spread recipes due to the fact that it can give you a wonderful glow from the inside out. The benefits of using olive oil in your recipes include:

Now, when used topically, olive oil can have similar benefits for our skin and hair. I love using olive oil in my beauty routine in the winter time when my skin really needs extra hydration. With tonight being New Year’s Eve, many of us will be imbibing and most likely drinking more than we normally would.

If you’re like me, you’ll wake up tomorrow with dry, dehydrated skin due to an abundance of wine (or tequila – it’s plant based!). Sometimes bombarding your system with water doesn’t fully do the trick, so some homeopathic beauty remedies can really come to the rescue.

When used topically, olive oil penetrates the skin (unlike a lot of commercialized moisturizers, by the way). Not only does it hydrate and moisturize the skin, it may improve the elasticity and can smooth out wrinkles. The antioxidant compounds in olive oil penetrate and heal damaged skin, leaving us with a supple and hydrated face.

Now I know some of you are weary to using oils on your face, but this remedy is simply a facial mask. The ingredients can be found in your cupboard and this takes about 10 minutes to whip up (so you can do this tomorrow morning while hungover, it’s that easy).

What you need:

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • 3-4 drops of Vitamin E oil
  • 1 tsp dried calendula

Directions:

  1. Grind the dried calendula leaves into a powder (you can do this with a spoon and bowl)
  2. In another mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, honey, vitamin E oil. Then mix in the calendula
  3. Apply to your face and neck and let sit for 10 (or even longer if you desire)
  4. Rinse off with room temperature water, apply your favorite serum and moisturizer.

Besides olive oil, the Vitamin E is hydrating and helps smooth wrinkles and damaged skin. I use honey in this remedy because it acts as an anti-bacterial property. Sometimes after a night of indulgences, my skin flares up and pesky blemishes arise, so honey can help nip this problem in the bud.

I also added dried calendula flowers since calendula is known to brighten the skin when used topically. I think adding this will help give your skin a pick me up after a night out, but you can also make this simple face mask sans calendula if you don’t have this herb at home.

So my babes, let me know if you use this remedy tomorrow and how you like it. I know I’ll be letting this soak into my skin!

Another important note to point out is that you should be very selective when choosing an extra virgin olive oil. Many olive oils are processed and have chemicals added to them through the manufacturing phase. Not all olive oils are created equal so it’s important that you choose an organic, extra virgin and high quality oil when using it in your recipes and at home remedies.

To give more insight on what type of olive oils you can use especially for cooking purposes, I’m including a fun, quick and informative video by Mariano’s. In this video, the founder of Mariano’s, Bob Mariano, is talking with a local chef about various olive oils, and the benefits of extra virgin oils! See below!
