Keeping a youthful, clear, and *awake* complexion means more than just dousing our face in retinols or topical treatments, y’all. When it comes to the appearance of our skin, a holistic approach is key! This means applying the right types of products externally, eating the right types of foods internally, and supplementing with botanicals and herbs that help support everything else.
So I’m elated today to talk about the various supplements I’m currently testing out and trying this season to step up the protection and health of my skin. I created a partnership with Douglas Labs, one of my go to supplement sources, and selected some produts that have been on my radar so that I could test them out and share all their benefits with you guys.
Chicago weather is like the modern man: warm, embracing and alluring one day, and then cold and nightmarish the next. All these ups and downs doesn’t help your skin adapt to consistent weather (just how ups and downs with dudes doesn’t help our peace of mind, ladies). It’s about time we put up some line of defense for our skin so that it can handle anything that comes its way, environmental pollution, harsh weather conditions and more.
If you’re not a video type of person, I’ve included my vlog talking points below so that you can learn more about my go-to beauty supplements!
The Best Beauty Supplements For Youthful, Clear Skin
First up: The “Beauty Box” filled with two important supplements that not only helps your skin – but many other systems of your body as well.
- The first supplement – Ultra HNS – is packed with my favorite beauty boosting ingredients biotin, methylfolate, vitamin C, zinc, and a special type of keratin that helps hair skin and nail health. Biotin as many know helps stimulate cell production of hair, skin, and nails. Methylfolate is the biologically active form of folate (vitamin b9) and this vitamin helps boost the health of our skin as it acts as an antioxidant, protecting our skin from oxidative damage. Zinc is a mineral that helps kill bacteria that causes acne, thus preventing pesky breakouts. And keratin is a protein that is vital for strong hair and nails!
- The second supplement in this duo is their QUELL fish oil which helps keep your skin hydrated, supple, and glowing. I use fish oil not only for my skin but also for general inflammation. If I feel like I’m having lower back pain or aches I’ll stock up on my omega 3s to soothe and ease the inflammation.
Second up: Hydrolyzed Collagen Plus which is a collagen powder that I absolutely love to take. As we age our collagen levels naturally start to decline so I’ve been adding a collagen supplement to the mix.
- Collagen is a protein that’s found in abundance within our body naturally, but the aging process lowers our natural reserves. It is what keeps our skin elastic and resilient. Consuming collagen helps repair and nourish our skin as it’s packed with amino acids (the building blocks of protein).
- You can also use collagen for fitness recovery as it is also linked to supporting joint health and muscle tissue repair.
- What makes this specific supplement stand out for skin health even more is that it also has hyaluronic acid in it. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that brings maaaajor hydration to your skin. It binds to water molecules and holds together hydration so that your skin doesn’t lose out on being properly hydrated (especially in sub zero temperatures).
Last but not least: Skin Nourish Antioxidant
- Not only do a eat a diet rich in antioxidants, but I’ll supplement with some from time to time as well. Antioxidants protect our skin from free radicals and oxidative damage – think too much UV exposure, environmental pollution, smoke etc. Skin Nourish from Douglas Labs contains polyphenols which are super antioxidants, as well as grapeseed, Vitamin C and zinc again, and Phytoceramides.
- Polyphenols are a group of stellar antioxidants and have been linked to increase blood flow and oxygen to the skin – bringing life and color back into our cheeks! Grapeseed is wonderful as it has been linked to preventing sun damage, acting as a natural moisturizer, and stimulates collagen production. Vitamin C helps lighten skin tone and even out impurities, and phytoceramides are plant-based ceramides and act as a “binder” for skin cells and elasticity. Our skin naturally contains lipids called ceramides, but just as collagen when we age these levels decrease – meaning that consuming foods and supplements with phytoceramides can potentially infuse our skin back with this essential compound!
I usually space out my supplements and take the HNS and fish oil in the morning after breakfast, the collagen after a workout, and the skin nourish in the evening. It’s my easy yet effective beauty supplement routine! On top of my supplements though, I make sure that I eat primarily a plant-based meal – and use products free from any harmful chemicals and parabens.
